On the occasion of the 68th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War members of staff of the Ukrainian Embassy in the Hellenic Republic on May 9, 2013 laid flowers at the grave of the Soviet soldier, Mykola Schavel’, at the Athens military cemetery of soldiers of the allied troops of the anti-Hitler Coalition. They were joined by the representatives of the Hellenic – Ukrainian Chamber. The commemorative event began with a memorial service for the fallen and those innocently killed.
Ukrainian and Greek speakers at the ceremony underlined that the joint victory of the 1945 will forever remain a symbol of the heroic past, greatness of spirit and brotherhood of nations in the name of defeating fascism, which serves as a true example of patriotism for descendants.
During the celebration of Victory Day, at the invitation of the mayor of the Municipality of Kallithea K.Askunis, Ambassador of Ukraine V.Shkurov with the members of staff of the Embassy took part in the ceremony of laying flowers to the monument to Soviet soldiers at the Municipality of Kallithea (Athens). In his speech during the ceremony the Ambassador stressed the importance of Victory to the international community, underlined that in Greece live the representatives of different countries, whose families suffered during the war and urged to preserve the memory of people who gave their lives for a happy future for coming generations.
Later that day, Embassy representatives greeted the veterans of the Great Patriotic War and participants in the liberation of Ukraine Mrs. Lidia Zinovieva and Mrs. Zinaida Kuznetsova and presented to them bouquets of flowers and tokens of appreciation.
