On October 30, 2013 with the blessing of Holy Patriarch of Constantinople and New Rome Bartholomew II and the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Metropolitan Volodymyr, on the initiative of the President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych, the holy relic (the right hand) of the St. George the Victorious that stored in the Holy Monastery of Xenophon of Mount Athos, will dispatch to Ukraine.
The holy relic will be in Ukraine till the 5th of December, 2013, at first – in Kiev Pechersk Lavra, later – in the monasteries and temples of other Ukrainian regions: Chernihyv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Lviv and more.
St. George the Victorious at all times has been revered as the patron of warriors. He lived in the II - III century. By joining the Roman army, he deserved the attention of the Emperor Diocletian by his holy feats of arms and was named one of the senior commanders. Upon learning of the Emperor`s decree to persecute the Christians, George openly opposed the Emperor, and after the eight days of torment was beheaded on November 23 of the year 303.
Just before bringing the relics to Ukraine, the Ukrainian TV will show the film devoted the Mount Athos and the St. George the Victorious.
