Press release To commemorate the Holodomor victims in Ukraine
22 November 2019 14:50

Every year on the last Saturday of November Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor famine genocide of 1932-1933.

This year, the commemorative events to honor the memories of those who perished of the man-made tragedy will commence on November 23rd at 16:00 with the All-Ukrainian Action “Light a candle”.

The Holodomor is a genocide of the Ukrainian nation perpetrated and instigated by the leadership of the Soviet Union, led by Stalin, through an artificially-created mass famine with an intention of exterminating Ukrainians, ultimately eliminating the Ukrainian resistance to the regime and nation’s efforts to build an autonomous Ukrainian state independent from Moscow.

The day named the Memorial Day for the Victims of Holodomor is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of November when every Ukrainian family lights a Candle of Memory for the millions of deceased due to the inhuman atrocities imposed on the Ukrainians by the Stalin regime.

Through the forcible confiscation of food, the blockade of villages and entire regions, prohibition of travel outside Ukraine captured by famine, the curtailment of rural trade and the repression of every form of dissent the Soviet totalitarian system created inhumane conditions for Ukrainians to live in, directed towards their physical destruction. Such policy of the Stalin regime is a crime against humanity that strongly violates and disregards the UN Convention of 9 December 1948 on the Prevention and Punishment for the Crime of Genocide.

Reports of mass murder of people by the artificial famine had been suppressed by the Soviet authorities for a long time, any mention of the terrifying tragic events was forbidden.

On November 28th of 2006 Verkhovna Rada, the Parliament of Ukraine, adopted the Law of Ukraine "On the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine" which defines the famine of 1932-1933 as genocide of Ukrainian people. Holodomor is officially recognized as genocide of the Ukrainian nation in more than 30 countries of the world.

This year marks the 86th anniversary of this date while the pain does not subside and the memory remains alive in hearts, minds, and memories of Ukrainians.

In the framework of Holodomor victims’ commemoration events in the Hellenic Republic, the Embassy of Ukraine, on the initiative of the Trembita Cultural and Cultural Heritage Center in cooperation with the Greek-Ukrainian Chamber, and with the participation of all Ukrainian public associations, organizes a memorial service on November 29th at 17:30 on the occasion of Holodomor's 86th Anniversary.

We invite you to join us at this event (the venue of the Embassy of Ukraine to the Hellenic Republic, S. Delta, 2).
