On November 10, 2011, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Volodymyr Shkurov, welcomed at the Ukrainian diplomatic mission a descendant of the prominent surgeon, scientist and educator, Mykola Pyrogov, Ms. Alexandra Nikiforaki, who lives in Greece.
In the course of their friendly conversation, Ambassador Shkurov noted with pleasure the Hellenic MFA’s assistance in establishing contact with Mykola Pyrogov’s relatives in Greece and passed on to the guest an open invitation from the National Pirogov’s Estate Museum in the village Vyshnia of the Vynnitsa region of Ukraine for a visit.
Ms. Nikiforak accepted the invitation with gratitude, as well as the Embassy’s offer to assist in forwarding to the Museum copies of archival documents associated with Mykola Pyrogov’s mansion and his relatives. She said that his descendants in Greece are proud of the familial connection with the famous surgeon, and that her late father, Andreas Gershelman, who was a great grandson of Mykola Pyrogov, had published in Greece a book about his great grandfather and visited the Museum in 1978.
