Opening the solemn ceremony of the laying of flowers at the monument of Taras Shevchenko in the Greek capital, in which took part Vice mayor of Zografou, where the monument is located, Mr. A.Papakonstantinou and members of Municipal Counsil, Ambassador of Ukraine Volodymyr Shkurov underlined the unprecedented role of the personality of Shevchenko in the context of world cultural heritage, in the revival of Ukrainian national consciousness. The Ambassador stressed that perpetuate poet in Greece is a clear manifestation of the friendly relations between our countries and peoples. The teachers and the students of Slavic Studies Department of Athens National University also were participated of the ceremony.

Later that day, in memory of the great poet in the Cultural-Information Center of the Embassy of Ukraine to the Hellenic Republic was organized the gala event in collaboration with the Greek-Ukrainian Chamber and the Center for support and development of the Ukrainian cultural heritage `Trembita`. During the event were opened exhibition `Historical retrospective review of the publications of Greek press about Shevchenko`,  photoexhibition `In all its own destiny`, that was courtesy given to the Embassy from the State specialized publishing house `Mystetstvo`.

After the laying of flowers at the bust of Taras Shevchenko at the Ukrainian Diplomatic mission, the numerous participants have been welcomed by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Hellenic Republic Volodymyr Shkurov and the First Vice-President of the Greek-Ukrainian Chamber Mr. Gerassimos-Nikolaos Bougas. Philologist Ms. Natalia Basenko-Kormari delivered a speech `Greek press about Taras Shevchenko`.

Students of the SaturdaySchool of the Center `Trembita` and the kids of the Embassy’s employees welcomed guests with the musical and poetic composition.

Events devoted to the anniversary of Taras Shevchenko`s birth will also be held by the Ukrainian organizations in Greece during the March.
