On February 22, 2011, the Public Council of Ukrainians with the Embassy of Ukraine in the Hellenic Republic, which is comprised of leaders of various organizations and members of the Ukrainian diaspora in Greece, held its grand meeting at the Mission on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the birth of the great Ukrainian poetess Lesia Ukrainka.
The theme of the poetess’ creative works was interpreted in a presentation delivered by the philologist and lecturer of the Mariupol State University, Ms. Natalia Basenko and performances delivered by students of the Ukrainian School associated with the Ukrainian Cultural-Educational Center, “Beregynia”.
After the formal portion of the meeting, Ukraine’s Ambassador briefed attendees on the current internal political and economic situation in Ukraine and priorities for development of Ukrainian – Greek relations in the current year.
Participants of the meeting agreed to have the Ukrainian Embassy and associations of Ukrainians hold joint events in 2011, conduct events honoring Taras Shevchenko in March of this year and discussed current issues of the Ukrainian community’s situation in Greece.
Consular officers with Ukraine’s Embassy responded to numerous questions regarding consular servicing of Ukrainian citizens in Greece.
