26 November 2011 12:23

On November 26, 2011, a ceremony of mourning took place at the Embassy of Ukraine in Greece to honor the memory of the victims of the 1932-1933 Holodomor in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Embassy employees and their family members, together with representatives of the Ukrainian community in Greece, honored the memory of the millions of innocent victims of the Great Famine of 1932 to 1933. In doing so, they lowered the national flag of Ukraine, held a religious service with a moment of silence and lit candles in memory of the victims.

Addressing the participants of the commemorative event, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Volodymyr Shkurov, underlined that horrible crime of the 1932-1933 Holodomor, whose victims became in the time of peace millions of Ukrainians and representatives of other nations, must not be forgotten. With the tremendous amount of research and explanatory work and the Ukrainian Diaspora drive, noted Ambassador V.A. Shkurov, Ukraine managed to return the fact of Holodomor not only into her own history but also into the world’s one.

On the 78th year mournful anniversary of the Holodomor, fellow countrymen remembered those who died a terrible death by starvation, both in the classrooms and in church services.
